he moved to New York to work first as an intern, later gaining full time employment and working in a hands-on capacity for the various menswear labels. “I leaned the practical work processes needed for a fashion designer,” explains Kwon of his time abroad. “I learned not only how to design garments but also how to choose quality fabrics and maximise sales potential. I could never have started my brand without this experience.” Due to the unfortunate passing of his grandmother, Kwon returned to South Korea and, in retrospect, identities the period as a blessing. “Because of her and returning home I was able to start my brand early,” he says. Beginning with fall 2012, the Munsoo Kwon was born, having since grown in size and reputation to now comprise partnerships with such respected retailers as Restir, Lilium, Twist “ i learned not only how to design garments but also how to choose quality fabrics and maximise sales potential. i could never have started my brand without this experience. “ and Hypebeast, the result of regular runway shows at Seoul Fashion Week and showroom presentations abroad. “My collections show a story that the customer can understand, and are always inspired by the world around me,” explains the designer. The aim, says Kwon, is to avoid the saturated menswear market by offering neatly tailored, modern silhouettes that are at once practical and distinctive in style. Over time, he has developed several signatures in his design handwriting, such as open- split details on the back of outers, and specially marked pockets.
