International Woolmark Prize : Munsoo Kwon
Contents
perhaps not surprising, but Kwon’s talent is that he has used the award as a platform to explore new technologies and techniques. Inspired by the fog that surrounds his hometown in the early mornings, Kwon’s capsule collection, to be presented at the international final in Florence, aims to explore the various shades and density of the city’s air quality – an unusually abstract concept, but one cleverly rendered in his design. Using a particular needle- punching technique, Kwon’s garments, such as a two-piece suit, run the gamut from traditional navy and white wool pinstripe through to solid white, as though cloud coverage is expanding over the patterns of the suit. His use of layering, which includes knee-length shirts, and skin-tight pants worn beneath shorts, helps to break up the traditional silhouette of the suit while still retaining its inherent wearability. Kwon sees winning the International Woolmark Prize as an opportunity to communicate his unique vision of menswear to a broader global audience, which is certainly key to assisting business growth when based outside of the traditional menswear capitals of Florence or London. “The prize has such a long, prestigious history, so to be part of that is exciting,” he says. “Beyond the prize money, the help in fabric sourcing offered by The Woolmark Company is a tremendous help for me as a young designer.” “ beyond the prize money, the help in fabric sourcing offered by the woolmark company is a tremendous help for me as a young designer. ” “The prize has such a long, prestigious history, sotobepartof that is exciting.” Munsoo Kwon | Asia
