International Woolmark Prize : SUKETDHIR
Contents
“I feel like a drop of oil in a bucket of water,” explains New Delhi-based designer Suket Dhir. “The Indian fashion design industry is built around the wedding market – always about brides and grooms and these lavish events – whereas menswear in a more contemporary sense is still very much emerging.” With a rapidly evolving economy and influx of global retailers, that landscape is certainly shifting, and while it can be said that building a fashion label as a young designer is a challenge anywhere, India presents a particularly unique set of hurdles. “People spend their money on dressing for special events, not necessarily for their daily lifestyle, and that can be financially straining.” Dhir supplements his work with bespoke commissions for weddings, but SUKETDHIR, as his label is called, is his main focus, the winner of the International Woolmark Prize regional final for India, Pakistan and the Middle East. Dhir is a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology in India’s capital, and spent several years following his graduation trying his hand at various jobs, including the design of an entry- level line for denim brand Wrangler, before launching his label in 2009. From the very beginning, Dhir’s intention has been to create pieces not already offered in the Indian fashion market, and in terms of menswear, it was about simple pieces “ Blending the oriental, imperial and the traditional, the ColleCtion is a mix oF struCtured and Fluid drape that presents a transCultural style. “ Suketdhir | India, Pakistan and the Middle East
